Specifications

The Royal Starndard of Australia, also known as the Queen's Personal Australian Colours is the personal flag of Queen Elizabeth II in her role as Queen of Australia. The flag was approved for use in 1962. The flag is flown only when the Queen is in Australia, or is attending abroad in her role as the head of state of Australia. The Queen's representative, the Governor General of Australia has his or her own separate flag.

The flag consists of a banner of the coat of arms of Australia defaced by a seven-point star representing the Commonwealth star with a blue disc containing the letter E below a crown, surrounded by a garland of golden roses.

The six sections of coat of arms reflected on the flag each represent the arms of the Australiian states. The first, representing New South Wales, bears a red St George’s cross, upon which is centered a gold lion with a gold star on each arm. The second, symbolising Victoria contains a Crown and five white stars on a blue field. The third commemorates Queensland through a blue Maltese cross bearing a Crown, on a white field. South Australia is symbolised by the fourth section by a Piping Shrike on a gold field. Western Australia is the black swan resting on a gold field. Lastly Tasmania, completes the nation by displaying a red lion on a white field. The seven-point star symbolises the Australian states and territories. The blue disk bearing the E is taken from Her Majesty’s Royal Standard for the United Kingdom and is the common link between the various Royal Standards for the other Kingdoms for which she is Queen. It also symbolises the link of the Commonwealth of Nations.
