The Christian flag was designed for use by Christians over one hundred years ago. Today, it is displayed in Church sanctuaries and classrooms throughout North America. It was designed by Charles Overton in 1897. The red cross symbolizes Christian faith, God's love for man and the promise of eternal life. The blue, Christ's faithfulness until death and the white background purity, innocence and peace.
The flag was born in 1897 in a Coney Island New York church. The church's Sunday School was holding an old-fashioned Rally Day and had invited a guest speaker to address the event. For some reason, the speaker did not arrive. Superintendent Charles C. Overton substituted. An American flag lay there across the pulpit. Overton saw the flag and addressed his words to the flag and it's symbolism. During his speech he had the idea" why not also have a Christian flag?" His impromptu presentation resulted in a verbal picture of what has been for over 100 years the Christian flag. Only Mr. Overton knows whether he developed the concept or whether he listened to and verbalized God's message for a flag for his son.
In the American tradition, several pledges of allegiance have been written in respect of the flag similar to the following:
I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag,
And to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands,
One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again,
With liberty for all who believe.
