The Nishan Sahib is a Sikh holy flag often made of cotton or silk cloth and is generally triangular in shape, with a tassel at its end. The Nishan Sahib meaning symbol is the world wide symbol of Sikhism. It is flown outside every Sikh Gurdwara worldwide on a metal or timber pole to signify the presence of Khalsa in the neighbourhood and to invite the neighbourhood to prayer.

 

The Khanda, a double-edged sword and circular chakkar flanked by two single-edged swords, or kirpans, is centered in blue on a saffron background. The Khanda is placed high up on a flagpole as a invitation to prayer. An annual washing in milk and water during the festival of Vaisakhi indicates the faith's reverence to the flag and its meaning. .The Nishan Sahib is changed once the saffron color has faded.

 

During the early days of Sikhism, the background colour of the Nishan Sahib was white. The Guru Hargobind changed the white to safron and hoisted for the first time at Akal Takhat Sahib in the year 1609 CE. Armed Sikh orders such as the Nihangs reverse the colours of the flag whereby a safron Nishan Sahib on a blue field on their Gurudwaras.
