The flag of the Republic of Palau was adopted on January 1,1981 to commemorate the Island territory’s separation from the United Nations Trust Territory and the attainment of republic status. The flag’s design of an off-centre disk is similar to the flags of both Bangladesh and Japan. The disk is symbolic of the moon over the South Pacific. The Palauan people consider the full moon to be the optimum time for human activity and as such plan their celebrations, sowing and harvesting, fishing, tree-falling, and the carving of traditional canoes at this time of the month. The moon is a symbol of peace, love, and tranquility. The color blue symbolises the Pacific Ocean and the island nation’s place within it. It is also seen as representing the transition from foreign domination to self-government.
