In 1962 the United Nations created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands bringing together Marianas, the Carolines, the Marshalls and Palau under the administration of the United States. In 1965, this was expanded to include Yap, Chuuk and the Pohnpei district. In 1975, the Mariana Islands District sought to raise their status to Commonwealth status which was granted on January 1978 leaving the other islands with new status under the name of the Federated States of Micronesia. This new status resulted in the subsequent divorcing of Pohnpei from the new Commonwealth. Later that year, the Palau district and the Marshall Islands district would also rejected the proposed constitution and leave the new federation.
The flag of the Federated States of Micronesia was adopted on November 10, 1979. The symbolic blue field signifies the Pacific Ocean, with the four island groups of the federation commemorated by stars arranged as the points of a compass.
