The flag of the Republic of the Marshall Islands was adopted to signify the start of self-governance on May 1, 1979. Formerly part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, Marshall Islands had been administered by the United States on behalf of the United Nations. The flag was designed by former First Lady Emlain Kabua.
The flag features a symbolic representation of the islands' place within the ocean. A rising diagonal band symbolises the equator with a star above marking the Northern Hemisphere archipelago. The colour white symbolizes the Ratak Chain or sunrise with orange symbolising the sunset or Ralik Chain. They are known to also represent peace and courage. A twenty-four point star represents the number of the nation’s electoral districts, with four elongated points representing the nation’s four main cultural centers: Majuro, Jaluit, Wotje and Ebeye.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
