Detailed Description
Specifications

The flag of Liechtenstein was officially adopted on June 24, 1937. It was designed to reflect the national colours of blue and red which first appeared in the 17th century. The colours reflected Liechtenstein’s membership in the Holy Roman Empire at the time.

The colour blue symbolizes the radiant sky and red stands for the embers in the fireplace during evening gatherings. The golden color of the crown shows that the people, country and the princely House are united in their hearts and spirits.

The crown was added to the flag in 1937 at the request of Prince Franz, following the 1936 Olympics held in neighbouring Munich Germany. During competition, the Principality’s flag was often confused with that of Haiti. By adding the Crown to the flag, it was clearly Liechtensteinian. The design of the crown was slightly changed in 1982.
