The Flag of Greece was adopted in 1978 and is based on nine equal horizontal stripes of blue alternating with white. Known as the Galanolefci meaning Blue and White. Originally, the flag consisted of a blue background with a white diagonal cross. In 1978, the flag was changed to reflect a blue square in the upper hoist-side corner bearing a white cross. The cross symbolises Greek Orthodoxy, the country's established religion. The nine stripes are believed to represent the nine syllables of the phrase "E-lef-the-ri-a i Tha-na-tos" which in english is "Freedom or Death", The stripes are also seen as symbolising the nine Muses of Greek Mythology, also known as the goddesses of art and civilisation. Blue is the colour of the sea and is known to the Greeks as a "Lucky Colour" known to ward off all that is evil. White is the colour of freedom, an important concept to a people who have suffered years of Greek enslavement under the Turks.
