The Alberta provincial flag is based on the Alberta Coat of Arms, which was approved by Royal Warrant in 1907. Prior to 1905, Alberta was part of the Northwest Territories and did not have its own identity. The coat of arms shows a red St. George's Cross atop the blue in back of a range of snow covered mountains with green hills, a prairie and a field of wheat in front. On June 1st, 1968 the Province of Alberta passed the Flag Act officially recognizing the flag for use in the province.
