The flag of the Arab Republic of Egypt was adopted on October 4, 1984. The flag consists of a tri-colour design of the three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white, and black. The color red symbolises the period leading up to the Revolution and Coup d’état which deposed King Farouk as ruler of the country. A concurrent struggle was underway to end British occupation. White symbolizes the 1952 Revolution which achieved this goal without bloodshed. Black stands for the end of the Egyptian oppression at both the hands of their former monarch and British colonialists.
Centered within the flag’s white centre stripe, is the Egyptian shield. Known as the Eagle of Saladin it consists of a shield superimposed bearing a similar tri-colour design as the flag on a golden eagle facing the hoist. Below the eagle is the phrase Republic of Egypt in Arabic.
The current Egyptian flag is similar in design and colors to the flags of Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Only the Saladin differs between designs.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
