The colour red commemorates membership in the Arabic Gulf community and their strong ties to Islamic tradition.
Early Bahrainian flags were solid red. To commemorate an 1820 peace treaty with the United Kingdom, a white stripe was added to symbolise truce. To distinguish the flag from other nearby Arab states, a serrated edge was added in 1932.
Originally twenty-eight white serrations, the flag was amended in 1972 to reduce them to eight. In 2002 this was reduced to five, to represent the five Pillars of Islam.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
