The flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran was adopted on July 29, 1980 to reflect the changes brought to Iran by the Islamic Revolution. The flag consists of three horizontal bands of green above white and red, symbolizing vigour, peace, and courage. This design dates back to 1906, with no generally agreed upon explanation of the colours. Trimming both the bottom of the green and top of the red stripes are two bands of Kufic script continuously repeating the phrase “Allahu Akbar “or "God is Great” eleven times each. The twenty-two inscriptions are symbolic of the 22nd day of the 11th month 1979 which is also known as 22 Bahman 1357 in the Persian calendar. This commemorates the date of the Islamic revolution upon which the Shah and his Pahlavi Dynasty were over-run.
In 1980 emblems of the Islamic Revolution were added to the design consisting of four crescents and a sword. The four crescents form the word Allah in Arabic. The sword represents a powerful and sovereign state. The shape of the emblem is reminiscent of a red tulip, symbolising the memory of youth who died for Iran, building on a legend that red tulips grow out of the blood of martyrs, valuing patriotism and self-sacrifice. The symbol was designed by Hamid Nadimi, and was officially approved by Ayatollah Khomeini on May 9, 1980.
