The Republic of Suriname is one of four non-Spanish-speaking states in South America. Formerly known as the Nederlands Guyana, and or Dutch Guiana. It sits between French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and. Brazil to the south. The country is the smallest sovereign state in South America, in terms of area and population. It is also the only Dutch-speaking nation in the west, which is not a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Suriname also has the highest percentage of Muslims in the Americas.
The Flag of Suriname consists of five horizontal bands of green (top, double width), white, red (quadruple width), white, and green (double width). There is a large, yellow, five-pointed star centered in the red band. It was adopted on November 25, 1975, to upon independence from the Netherlands. The star symbolises the five founding cultures (Amerindian, European colonizers, African slaves, and the Hindus, Javanese, and Chinese who were sought as immigrants to replace the slaves upon emancipation) and how they came together in unity. The red stripe stands for progress and love, the green for hope and fertility, and the white bands for peace and justice.
