The Republic of Bolivia adopted its flag in 1851. The state flag and ensign consists of a horizontal tricolor of red, yellow, and green with the Bolivian coat of arms in centre field. The civil flag and ensign of Bolivia omits the coat of arms. The colour red is believed to symbolise Bolivia's brave soldiers, while green symbolises fertility and yellow, national mineral deposits.
By constitution, Bolivia also flies the Wiphala, a rainbow coloured square banner representing the native communities of the central Andes and Bolivian Amazon. Another interesting fact is that despite its landlocked status, Bolivia has a naval ensign which is flown by naval vessels navigating the nation’s rivers and lakes.
