The National Flag of El Salvador consists of two horizontal blue stripes with a white stripe in the middle of them on a cloth parallelogram. The officially dimensions are said to be 3.35 meters long by 1.89 meters wide. Adopted by legislative decree on May 17, 1912, it was later sworn on September 15th of that year at Campo Marte Park and personally raised by the President of the Republic, Dr. Manuel Enrique Araujo. It is the same Central American Federation flag decreed by the Constituting National Assembly on August 21, 1823.
The El Salvadoran Ministry of Education (Public Instruction) officially adopted a "Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag." The pledge to the National Flag is characterized by a strong devotion in that it symbolically expresses the Salvadoran people's fight for freedom. The ideals for peace, work and progress are sheltered under its pleats and by respecting, loving and learning to defend it, the Country can be lead towards the realization of its historic mission. Salvadorans are encouraged to memorize and recite the pledge often.
