The flag of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau was adopted in 1973 upon independence from Portugal. It is based on that of the flag of the Partido Africano para a Independencia da Guine e Cabo Verde who was the dominant political party in the former Portuguese colonies of Portuguese Guinea and Cape Verde. Both former colonies adopted flags based on the PAIGC flag upon independence. It remains the dominant party in Guinea-Bissau today.
The Party flag adopted by Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde was actually copied from that of Ghana, who pioneered the use of the Pan-African Colours red, yellow, green, and black in 1957. The Ghanaians felt that the black star was the ultimate symbol of African unity. Red was the symbol of martyrdom for those who died in the name of Independence and unity. Green is the fertility of the African continent and Gold is the wealth of the people and their abounding opportunity.
