The Republic of The Gambia, commonly known as Gambia, is a country in western Africa. It is the smallest country on the African continental mainland, bordered only by Senegal to the north east and south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Gambia became independent from the former British Empire on February 18, 1965 becoming a full member of the British Commonwealth.
The flag of the Republic of the Gambia consists of a horizontal tricolour of red, blue and green separated by white stripes. The red at the top symbolises both the sun and the savanna. The blue centre stripe symbolises the Gambia River that flows through the nation. The green symbolises both the land, and the forests. The white stripes represent peace.
