The original national flag of the Republic of Cape Verde was adopted upon independence from Portugal in 1975. It was reflective of its Pan-African neighbours using the colours of red, green and yellow. Identical to the flag of Guinea-Bissau except for the charge in the hoist stripe. Intentions to unite both countries never became a reality.
The current national flag is based on a blue field representing the Atlantic Ocean and sky which surrounds the islands of Cape Verde. Ten stars represent the chain of main islands which comprise the nation. Bands of white and red represents the roadway to national progress with the colours white standing for peace and red national effort. The flag mimics the symbolism of the European Union flag using the circular formation of yellow stars to portray unity amoungst the islands.
