The national flag of the Republic of Benin was originally adopted in 1959 in anticipation of its pending independence from France. It consisted of three symmetrical rectangles, a vertical green panel against the hoist and two stacked horizontal panels of yellow over red in the fly. The colours are traditional Pan-African and symbolise as follows: green for national hope and fertility, yellow wealth and prosperity and red courage and strength.
Benin, like other young African nations experimented with the Marxist style of government from 1975 through mid 1990. During this period, the nation changed its flag to a solid green field with a soviet style star in the canton. When Benin decided to drop the label Marxist from its name on August 1, 1990, it also restored its former three colour flag which remains today as its national symbol.
