The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia flag was adopted on February 6, 1996 in order to distance the country from its Marxist period which ended in 1991. Ethiopia was the originator of what are known today as the Pan-African colours. They originate from the Rastafari movement and appeared on Ethiopian flags as early as 1798. They symbolise African Unity and the hardship endured by black slaves prior to emancipation. Red represents power and the many gallons of African blood spilled to defend the land, yellow represents peace and harmony between Ethiopia's various ethnic and religious groups and green is the colour of hope, both for the land and its fertility.
The emblem is intended to represent both the diversity and unity of the country. The star, which is a pentagram, is yellow on a blue centre mounted up the green and red stripes. The star testifies to Ethiopia's bright future and echo a former link to the House of Solomon found in the Old Testament. The equidistant yellow rays emit the equality of all Ethiopians regardless of race, creed, or gender. Blue represents peace, the star represents diversity and unity, and the sun's rays symbolize prosperity. The green recalls the land and hope for the future, yellow stands for peace and love, and red is symbolic of strength.
