The national flag of the People's Republic of Algeria consists of two equal vertical bars, green and white, charged in the center with a red star and crescent. The white color represents peace while the green symbolises the beauty of nature. Like most nations, the red marks the blood of those killed fighting for independence. The nation's predominant Islamic faith is represented by a star and crescent.
The flag was adopted on July 3, 1962 based on a design used by Algerian government while in exile from 1958 to 1962. It was inspired from the standard of Emir Abdel Kadir in the 19th century which consisted of two equal vertical bands in green and white. Also by the flag of the Algerian Regency (16th to the 19th century), now flown by the Republic of Turkey.
