Djibouti Flag - Republic of

The national flag of the Republic of Djibouti consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue and green. Blue symbolises sea and sky. Green is the fertile earth. A white isosceles triangle based at the hoist and symbolising peace points in to the fly intersecting the two bands atcentre field. Centered within the triangle, is a red five-point red star representing the unity of the Somali and Afar people which populate Djibouti (former French Somaliland) and the former neighbouring colonies of British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland (both now Somalia), the Ogaden ( part of Ethiopia) and the Northern Frontier District (part of Kenya).

The national flag was an adaptation of the flag of the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Independence (LPAI) that led Djibouti to independence. The LPAI had flown a flag with a red triangle with a white star in contrast to the national flag. The white star also was slanted to the left to indicate political leaning. The light blue symbolised the Issa Somalis and the green the Afar. All three colours were official to the LPAI. The white star, had also indicated unity of a diverse state.

The national state flag of Djibouti was hoisted for the first time on June 27, 1977 to mark Independence Day from France.
