The flag of the Republic of Equitorial Guinea first appeared upon adoption uon independence October 12, 1968. The flag consists of a horizontal tricolor, with green, white and red stripes. A blue isosceles triangle based at the hoist points to centre field. Green symbolises natural resources and the nation's jungles. Blue symbolises the sea connecting the mainland with its coastal islands. White commemorates peace with red rememberiing the fight for independence.
In centre field is laid the national coat of arms consisting of a silver shield with a silk-cotton tree, taken from the arms of Rio Muni. Above the shield is an arc of 6 six-pointed yellow stars, representing Rio Muni and the offshore islands. Beneath, a silver scroll bears the national motto, Unidad, Paz, Justicia ("Unity, Peace, Justice").
The election in 1972, of Francisco Nguema resulted in the the coat of arms being replaced by arms emblematic of the dictator. A coup d'etat in August 1979 resulted in the restoration of the original coat of arms.
