The national flag of the Republic of Angola was adopted upon independence on November 11, 1975. It consists of a field split horizontally into an upper red half and a lower black half.
The design of the flag commemorates the flag of the country's ruling party. Originally marking the guerilla movement and later its successor government, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, used the same design with a golden star in the center. Red originally stood for socialism and black for Africa. The star, hammer and sickle were borrowed from the Soviet flag to show solidarity with its Marxist dreams.
The turmoil in the Soviet world in the 1980's resulted in softer definitions of the flag and its icons. Red is now the blood spilt by Angolans during their independence struggles, while the black remains the continent of Africa. The icon in the centre field is a crossed cog wheel representing labour and industry and the machete and star representing the peasantry.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
