The flag of the Madeira archipelago consists of a blue-gold-blue vertical triband with a red-bordered white Cross of Christ in the centre. Many believe that its design was inspired by the flag of the Madeira Archipelago Liberation Front. MALF was a facist organization seeking independence from Portugal for the island. Their flag was similar in design except that the cross consisted of 5 shields in formation. The flag of Portugal is the official national flag of Madeira.
