Part of the Norwegian Kingdom of the Hebrides until the 13th century when it was ceded to Scotland, the isle came under the British crown in 1765. Isle of Man is a British crown dependency but is not part of the United Kingdom. It enjoys a sense of autonomy with only defense and international relations left to the United Kingdom to carryout.
The flag of the Isle of man is red with the Three Legs of Man emblem (Trinacria) centredin the field. Three legs are joined at the thight and bent at the knee. In order to have the toes pointing clockwise on both sides of the flag, a two-sided emblem is used.
History does not agree as to why the Three Legs were adopted as the royal arms of the Manx kingdom. One theory states that a similar design was used elsewhere amongst the Celts and Norse populations of northwest Europe. The belief is that the Manx Three Legs were a heraldic modification of a Celtic or Norse badge or emblem in use by a neighbouring monarch. The fact that the the 'triskele', or simplified "Three Legs" emblem appeared on coins issued by the tenth century Norse King, Anlaf Cuaran, whose dominion included Dublin and the Isle of Man, establishes the theory that later Manx Kings descended from King Cuaran.
