Cook Islands Flag

The Flag of the Cook Islands is a traditional defaced British ensign similar in nature to other British Colonies in the Pacific region. The flag is known as a Blue Ensign which means it is a blue field bearing the Union flag in the canton. In the right field the flag is defaced by a design of 15 stars in a circular ring. The Union flag symbolises the nations past ties as a former British colony and as a current and equal member of the Commonwealth. The fifteen stars each represent one of the fifteen islands making up the Cook Islands. The blue field is symbolic of the mighty South Pacific Ocean which rules the nation.

From 1973 to 1979, the Cook Islands shed its British Identity and flew a solid green field with the the stars in yellow shifted more towards the fly. Green represented continuous growth and new life while yellow represented the faith, love, and commitment shown by the islanders. towards their new independence. The ring of stars was the union of the islands. the islanders and the land itself. In 1979, the Cook Islands decided to return to its roots and readopted the Blue ensign above.
