In addition, the Australian territory flies unofficilly the flag of Christmas Island which was adopted following a competition in 1986 by the Shire Council. The winning design earned Tony Couch of Sydney a prize of AUD $100.00. His design was made official on Australia Day, 2002 when Administrator Bill Taylor, presented the flag to the Christmas Island Shire.

The blue and green triangles represent the sea surrounding the island and its vegetation. Within the blue triangle is the Southern Cross in correct formation linking the island to Australia and her historic ensign. Within the green is a representation of the Golden Bosun Bird, a species unique to Christmas Island and one of its most popular symbols. Centred in the field is a gold disc representive of the island's history of phosphate mining. Surmounted on this disc is a green silhouette of Christmas Island.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
