The flag of the British Indian Ocean Territory is similar to the flags of other British dependencies and colonies in that it is an Ensign with the Union Flag in the upper hoist-side corner. The palm tree and crown are symbols of the Indian Ocean Territory. The flag breaks with tradition, in that instead of a red or blue field on the ensign it instead is a field of white and blue waves. The flag was commissioned by Royal charter in 1990 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the territory which had been previously part of the British Crown Colony of Mauritius.
The Territory is sparcely inhabited with only the residents of a UK-US Naval base living on the island. It is almost impossible for civilians to visit the British Indian Ocean Territory. The British Indian Ocean flag has only unofficial status, flying only at military bases on the island and at the office of the Commissioner who is based at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
