Antarctica Flag

To quote the CIA World Fact Book "The Antarctic Treaty freezes, and most states do not recognize, the land and maritime territorial claims made by Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom (some overlapping) for three-fourths of the continent; the US and Russia reserve the right to make claims; no claims have been made in the sector between 90 degrees west and 150 degrees west; the International Whaling Commission created a sanctuary around the entire continent to deter catches by countries claiming to conduct scientific whaling; Australia has established a similar preserve in the waters around its territorial claim."

That said, several national and or territorial flags continue to fly daily in the territory claimed by each sovereign nation. The French, Argentines, New Zealanders, and British have distinct territorial flags. In an attempt to recognize the treaty desire for neutrality, several "non-partisan" or neutral flags have appeared. The most common,the Graham Bartram design uses the flag of the United Nations as its model. A plain white map of the continent rests on a blue background symbolizing neutrality with no demarcation of national or territorial claims. This flag was actually flown on the Antarctic continent for the first time in 2002, when well-known vexillogist Ted Kaye raised several full-size flags while on vacation on the continent. The bases of Brazil, Ukraine, and the UK each raised the flag at their compounds, making its raising "official".
