Until 1967, the only flag flown in Anguilla was the British Union Jack. A 1967 revolution prompted the introduction of homegrown flag, featuring two mermaids with a shell between them. This flag design was conceived and sent to Anguilla, by expatriates living in San Francisco. As soon as it was hoisted, British authorities made sure it was taken down. Authorities replaced it with the Three Dolphins flag consisting of three orange dolphins representing endurance, unity and strength, and are in a circle for continuity. The flag had a white background, for peace and tranquility, with a turquoise-blue base representing the surrounding sea and also faith, youth and hope.
The current blue ensign was designed by a previous Governor of Anguilla, Brian Canty, who suggested a new flag and drew sketches which were sent to Buckingham Palace for royal approval by HM the Queen. The new flag, which was first hoisted on 30 May 1990, is a blue ensign with a Union Jack in the top left corner and a shield on the right side which shows three orange dolphins on a white background with a turquoise-blue base.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
