American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific, southeast of the other Samoa, a sovereign state. Samoa was inhabited as early as 1000 B.C and discovered by European explorers in the 18th century. Rivalries between various European governments as to the ownership of Samoa resulted in an 1899 treaty which divided the archipelago between Germany and the United States. The smaller American portion has been occupied continuously since that date.
The Flag of the Territory of American Samoa was adopted on April 24, 1960. The flag is blue with a white triangle, edged in red based in the fly and reaching to the hoist. To the right, an American bald eagle carries traditional Samoan symbols of authority, a war club known as a Fa'alaufa'i, and a coconut fiber fly-whisk known as a Fue. The flag is representative of the territory’s relationship with the USA. The red, white and blue colours are a common thread binding the two together as is the bald eagle. The flag was hoisted for the first time on April 27, 1960.
Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
