The Overseas Territory of Turks and Caicos has an interesting history. Turks began under British rule in 1766. In 1804 administration of the Turks Islands was granted to Jamaica. The Caicos Islands joined the Turks in 1848 as as a separated administrative territory of Jamaica where they remained until 1962 whereby Britain transfered administration to the Bahamas. To commemorate the transfer to the the Bahamas, the Queen granted the territory her own Coat of Arms in 1965 and her own flag in 1968. When the Commonwealth of the Bahamas was given nationhood in 1973, the Turks and Caicos became a colony under the British Crown in its own right.
The flag of the Turks and Caicos Islands is a blue ensign similar to the flags of other British dependencies and colonies. It bears the Union flag in the canton and a yellow shield in the field. Upon the shield are the colony's coat of arms bearing a conch shell, lobster and cactus. It was adopted on November 7, 1968.
