The Territorial Collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is a group of small islands in the North Atlantic Ocean under the control of France. The two largest, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon are located within 25 kilometres (16 miles) of the shores of Newfoundland Canada. Named for Saint Peter, the patron saint of fisherman and to commemorate several local Basque fishermen named Michael. It is the only remnant of the former colonies of New France still administered by France.
The local flag of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is sea blue bearing a yellow representation of the Grande Hermine, the ship transporting Jacques Cartier to Saint-Pierre on June 15th, 1536. Below in white and black, waves symbolise its place in the mighty Gulf of St Lawrence and Atlantic Ocean. Three square fields adjacent to the hoist commemorate through heraldic arms the French colonists who settled the islands. The top square representing the Basques, displays the Ikurriña, which is a red with green diagonal cross extending to the corners overlain with a white cross creating quarters. The Bretons are represented in the centre by a white field overlain by an ermine pattern. Lastly, the Normans are represented by a red field with two stylized yellow lions outlined in black. French law describes the official flag of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon as the French Tricolour. It appears on occasions of state and protocol. Otherwise the local flag is flown proudly.
