French Southern and Antarctic Lands Flag - Territory of the

The official flag of the French Southern Lands and Antarctica is the French Tricolore of France.

Known locally as les Terres Australes et Antartiques Francais or TAAF, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands incorporate five administrative districts of French territory into one unit. The Iles Crozet and Iles Kerguelen, the two volcanic islands of Ile Saint-Paul and Ile Amsterdam, and les Iles Eparses near Madagascar together with a thin slice of Antarctica known as Adelie Land were united under the TAAF banner. The unofficial flag of the territory is the flag of the Senior Administrator of the unit which itself is unofficial.

Shortly after his appointment, the first Senior Administrator, Monsieur Richert, adopted a personal flag to commemorate his appointment to TAAF. He had had been the Administrator of Overseas France, a position considered quasi military in nature and came with the uniform and three stars thereon. His flag was similar to the flags used by the former Colonial Governors and High Commissioners of Overseas Territories in that it was a local flag with the parent’s flag (the tricolore) in the canton. Similar to the British style ensigns, the blue field was defaced by an emblem in the shape of a white anchor made up of the white letters TAAF. Five white stars representing each of the five districts in the administrative area completed the design. Each subsequent administrator to Richart maintained this flag to where it has become known as the local flag of choice and flies beside the tricolore.

Flags Measures 36 in x 60 in and are 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
