Guam Flag - United States Territory of (USA)

The United States Territory of Guam flag was designed by Mrs. Helen Paul, the wife of an American naval officer. It was officially adapted as the territorial flag by Governor Roy C. Smith in 1917.

The flag consists of a deep blue field representing the ocean, accented by a red border symbolising the blood shed as the Island’s early residents. In the centre is the the Seal of Guam. The seal is shaped to reflect a Chamorro sling stone, a native weapon usedfor warfare and hunting. The sling stone was quarried from basalt and coral. The Coconut Tree known locally as the “Tree of Life” growing in infertile sand symbolises self-sustenance and determination and the ability to grow and survive under any circumstance. Its fronds open to the sky symbolising that it defies the elements and bends at will. This attests to a people tested by famine, natural disaster and genocide and foreign wars but have continued to endure.

A river channel, where interacting with the ocean, symbolizes the island’s willingness to share their land and resources with others. On the water, a flying Proa, or seagoing craft built by the Chamorro people, indicates the local population’s agility and skill as a seaward race. Similarly, the Hila'an land mass in the background demonstrates a commitment to homeland and environment, be it sea or land. In addition, "Two Lovers' Point" jutting majestically into the endless waters of the sea, portrays the people's faithful commitment to their proud heritage, culture, and language and its relationship to the endless sea of future generations.

Like other colonial outposts, Guam is beginning to discuss the concept of self-determination. Until a decision is reached to make a change, Guam will continue to fly its flag beside and respectful of the flag of the United States of America.
