The flag of Sint Maarten was adopted 13 June 1985. It it consists of red over blue with a white isosceles triangle pointing inward from the hoist. Within the triangle is the Sint Martin coat of arms. The colours are adopted from the Netherlands flag.
The arms depict an old courthouse together with a bouquet of yellow sage the national flower. A silhouette of a local monument honoring Dutch-French friendship and the unity of the two european inhabitants of the island. The orange border symbolizes loyalty to the Dutch Monarch who is a member of the House of Oranje-Nassau. A crest formed by a yellow disc representing the sun and a grey silhouette of a pelican in flight. The motto "Semper Progrediens" symbolises the island as "Always Progressing".
Currently Sint Maartin is a Eilandgebied or component of the Netherlands Antilles, which is an Autonomous Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2008 in local referendums, Sint Maartin and Curacao have voted to become equally autonomous Kingdoms under the Netherlands Crown. Stay tuned to see if they change their flag once this is achieved sometime in 2009.
