The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed by Luritja (Wompei) artist Harold Thomas to commemorate the first National Aborigines Day held July 12, 1971. This event was marked by the first raising of the new flag. It also appeared informally at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra in 1972, upon which it was adopted and has flown ever since. Today it is a widely recognized symbol of Aboriginal identification and unity.
The Commonwealth of Australia officially recognized the flag in 1994. After a period of public consultation, the Aboriginal Flag was proclaimed as an official “Flag of Australia” under the nation’s Flag Act. The flag’s design is "per fess sable and gules, a roundel or." In English, a yellow circle signifying the sun against a horizontally divided field of black representing the night sky and the red earth.
