Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Flag

The first official flag of the Soviet Union was adopted in December of 1922 at the First Congress of Soviets of the USSR. The red banner which had been the symbol of the Communist Party  become the symbol of the State around which the peoples of the soviet republics would unite and gather into body - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. On December 30th 1922 the Congress adopted a Declaration and Agreement establishing the USSR. together with an official flag, coat of arms and a state seal.

The second session of the Congress of the USSR enshrined in the Soviet Constitution the definition of the new republic's flag on July 6, 1923. The Constitution stated that The state flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was to be a red or scarlet field with the state coat of arms' centred in the flag. The flag lasted four months, whereby it was replaced officially by the more familiar "hammer and sickle" design during the third session of the Soviet Congress on November 12, 1923. The description of the flag was once again constitutionally changed to consists of a red or scarlet field, with a golden sickle and hammer in the canton  and a red five-pointed star bordered in gold above it. The hammer symbolized the nation's industrial workers, while the sicle symbolized the nation's agricultural workers. The red star represented the rule of the Communist Party. The back side of the flag was red, without symbols. The flag was retired on December 3, 1991 after the dissolution of the USSR.
