St. George's Cross Flag (England)
SKU: SGC35P

St George's Cross is the historic and national flag of England. It is a red cross on a white background and dates back to around the year 1277. The flag and cross are named after St. George who is the patron saint of England. George was ordered executed in the year 303 by caesar Galerius for for admitting his Christianity and refusing to carryout the persecution of other Christians by the Romans in Nicomedia. King Edward III of England who founded the Order of the Garter in 1348 recognized George in his effort to promote knighthood. During his reign, George came to be recognized as England’s patron saint.

The Act of Union in 1707 joined England with Scotland to form the United Kingdom and prescribed a new Union flag for the new combined Kingdoms. The St. George’s Cross remains unofficially and continues to be used when showing allegiance to England alone. The Union Flag is the flag with national status.

The St. George’s Cross remains the rank flag of an Admiral in the Royal Navy, and civilian craft are forbidden from flying it. The one exception is for those ships which participated during WWII with the rescue at Dunkirk who are allowed to fly the flag in remembrance.English pride will ensure that St. Georges Cross can be found flying next to the more senior Union Flag. Especially at the local football or rugger match.
