St. Andrew's Cross (Scotland) Flag SKU: SAC35P
The unofficial flag of Scotland is the Cross of St. Andrew. The official flag is the Union Flag which is comprised in part of St. Andrew’s cross. St Andrew, one of the Apostles was sentenced to death by the Roman Authorities shortly after the death of Christ. Legend states that Andrew petitioned for and was granted the right to be crucified on a different shape cross than that used for Christ. When St. Regulus had a vision telling him to take the bones of St. Andrew to a far-off land, they were believed to have been taken to Muckros in Scotland which was later renamed Kilrymont and now is known as St. Andrews. In the 9th century, the Picts and Scots combined to battle the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria at Athelstaneford in East Lothian. Before the battle was to begin, a formation of white clouds in the shape of the cross of St Andrew appeared in the blue sky. The Northumbrians were defeated creating a unified Scotland. St Andrew would later become the patron saint of Scotland. The white cross on a sky blue background later became the Scottish national flag or Saltire during the 12th century. When King James VI of Scotland became James I of England (including Scotland) in 1603 he upset the Scottish Parliament by proposing a new flag which combined the Cross of St. Andrew with England’s flag, the Cross of St. George. The St. Andrew’s Saltire was reduced to unofficial status in 1801, when it was combined with the Crosses of St. George (England) and St. Patrick (Ireland) to create the Union Flag. British law and tradition recognizes only the Union Flag. The Cross of St. Andrew flies with the Union flag or unofficially on private buildings but always in the hearts of the Scottish People. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying. Regularly priced at $11.49 CAD Save 25% until 30 Jan 2009
