Red Dragon Flag (Wales)
SKU: WRD35P

Y Ddraig Goch or Red Dragon in welsh is the national flag of the Principality of Wales. It is believed to commemorate in mythology Merlin’s vision and later visualization of a white dragon which slaughters a red dragon that subsequently rises again. This symbolizes the Saxon’s failure to conquer Wales. In 1953 Elizabeth II granted the flag an "honorable augmentation", the dragon being surrounded by a scroll bearing the words: "Y’ddraig goch ddyry cychwyn" which translates to "The red dragon lends impetus"

The Welsh flag consists of two equal horizontal strips, white over green, with a large dragon passant super-imposed. The red dragon, introduced to Britain by the Romans, was adopted by the Saxons and continues today to be a symbol of British Royalty. Stories exist which say it was Arthur, who adapted it from Caesar’s personal standard, and introduced it to Celtic royalty.

Recently, there has been growing objection to the use of the dragon standard due to its pagan origins suggesting rather that the Cross of St. David (gold on a black background) should be adopted as the Welsh national flag. However, after centuries of use in the principality by Christian-minded royalty, and as symbolism of Welsh freedom and liberty the red dragon flag remains alive in the minds of Welsh society. The conquest of Wales by England in 1282 diminished the Red Dragon as secondary to the English and later the Union Flags.  It has not suppressed the spirit of Wales or its people.
