Irish Red Hand Flag (Northern Ireland)
SKU: IRH35P

The official flag of Ireland which was incorporated into the Union flag is the St. Patrick's Cross.  The flag of St. Patrick never won the hearts of the Irish people. The creation of the Irish Republic in the 1920s, created a need for a flag which could represent the  loyalist population committed to King and Country.

The flag chosen was a version of St. Georges Cross, the flag of England with a red right hand derived from Ireland's pagan beginnings.  It is a symbol found in Irish heraldry and in the arms of several Ulster based clans. The centre of the flag contains a Star of David with each point representing one of the six counties of Ulster. To show loyalty to Her Majesty the Queen, a British Crown rises to the centre top of the flag.

As a result of the Bloody Sunday uprising in Derry in January 1972, the British government took steps to abolish the Parliament of Northern Ireland, the National Anthem "A Londonderry Air" and also the Red Hand Flag.  Authority for Northern Ireland was transferred back to Westminster and the Union Flag was made Northern Ireland's official symbol.  Agreements such as the Good Friday accord which have started the return of  autonomy back to the Northern Irish people have not yet reinstated their flag.  Unionists tend to use the Union flag and sometimes the Red Hand Flag, while Nationalists typically use the Irish Tri-colour. Irish Rugby enthusiasts can be seen with St. Patrick's Cross, the Red Hand, or the Tri-colour depending on who they want to win the match.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
