Confederate States of America Flag

The Confederate States of America were a group of 13 US States who attempted to secede from the United States and form a new nation. This was precipitated by Abraham Lincoln's efforts on behalf of the Northern American States to outlaw the use of slaves in America. Seven original states saw the end of slavery as a threat to their economic and social systems. These were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. They were joined later by Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina. Kentucky and Missouri attempted to break from the north but weren't as committed. They operated throughout the time of the Confederacy with two recognized governments, one Confederate and one Union. As the Confederate nation grew, the flag evolved similarly to the early flags of America. As more states joined the CSA, the flag need to be changed. The best-known Confederate flag was the battle flag, the familiar "Southern Cross." It was carried by Confederate troops in the field which were the vast majority of forces under the Confederacy. The flag consisted of 13 stars each representing one of the 11 true Confederate states and the two states showing dual allegiance Kentucky and Missouri. The Confederate Southern Cross is generally recognized as the symbol or flag of the South. It never flew over any official building in the CSA. The flag was square with the star laden navy cross on a scarlet background. A similar design which is more rectangular in shape was used as the Confederate Naval Ensign and could be seen on gun boats and frigates all through the South. Today it is the most commonly seen symbol of the Confederate experiment. It is worshipped by some and hated by others. The emotions it conveys still impact on the tone of the American political landscape and will continue to do so for years.
