Chile Flag - Republic of
SKU: CHL35P

During Chile's struggle for independence, the government of José Miguel Carrera called for the creation of a Chile's first national flag. It was raised for the first time on July 4, 1812 at a banquet celebrating the 4th of July at the home of  United States Consul, Joel Robert Poinsett. The banner represented the three powers of the State: Majesty, Law, and Strength. Its design resembled the modern day Visa Card with three stripes of Blue, White and Gold. The new flag did not survive the power of the Spanish Empire. In May of 1814 upon the signing of the Treaty of Lircay, it was commanded that it be replaced by the Spanish flag.

With the assistance of "El Ejército Libertador" (Liberator Army), organized in Argentina, Chile was able to end Spanish Control .in the fall of 1817. This new government adopted the 'Bandera de la Transición". This flag was similar to the first design however the gold had been replaced with red. The Blue represented the Chilean Sky, the white the Snow covered Andes Mountains and the Red was the blood shed on the field of battle. This flag was also short lived as it was considered too similar to that of the Netherlands.

The current design was made official on October 18, 1817 and was used during the Oath of Independence from Spain. The design kept the Blue, White and Red motif in a new design. The flag consists of two equal horizontal bands of white (top) and red; with  a blue square the same height as the white band at the hoist-side end of the white band. The square bears a white five-pointed star in the center representing a guide to progress and honor. It is often thought that this design was based on that of the USA and that nations fight for freedom.
