Slovak Republic Flag
SKU: SLO35P

The first Slovak flag was a white-red bi-color which was waved on 23rd April 1848 in Brezová during a theatre performance. As Slovak territory was occupied by the Hungarians, the new flag was not well received. Blue was added to the flag in time for revolutionaries in Velká nad Veličkou near the Hungarian-Moravian border to hold a protest on the 18th of September 1848. Several variations of red, white and blue Slovak and Slavic flags were raised in protest.

The present order of the three stripes of Slovak flag was established after 1868. The Czechoslovak flag adopted on 30th March 1920 combined the red and white Czech flag with the Slovak flag with a blue triangle at the hoist to represent Slovakia. After the puppet Slovak Republic was established by Nazi occupiers, the law of 23rd June 1939 enacted the white-blue-red tri-colore as the state flag. The same flag was enacted after the Velvet Revolution on 1st March 1990 by the Slovak National Council. The constitution of September 1992 added the coat of arms to ensure it was not mistaken for the Russian flag.
