Russian Federation Flag SKU: RUS35P
Popular myth traces the origin of the Russian flag to a visit by Czar Peter the Great to the Netherlands in 1699. The Czar went to the Netherlands to investigate shipbuilding opportunities for his country, He returned to Russia with this new knowledge but also with an envy for the Dutch Naval flag. A new flag was commissioned copying the Netherlands' tricolour flag. The new colours were based on the Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Moscow, which depicted Saint George wearing white (silver) armour, riding a white horse, wearing a blue cape and holding a blue shield, on red field. Russian legend also associates these three colours with the Virgin Mary, the holy protectress of Russia. To complicate the legend, a German flag book of 1695 predating Peter's trip to Holland describes flags of a similar design belonging to the Czar of Muscovy and is claimed to have been flown on the Oriol, the first Russian Navy ship as early as 1667. Czar Nicholas II changed the flag in 1914, adding the Romanov eagle on a yellow field in a canton in the top left-hand corner. In 1917, The Bolsheviks changed the flag of the Russian Republic to that of Soviet Union. This remained the official flag of Russia and the other Soviet Republics until the disintegration of the USSR in the early 1990’s On August 22, 1991, the newly formed Russian Federation which arose from the ashes of the USSR readopted the former flag of the Czar. It consisted of the same tricolour introduced to Russia by Peter the Great. Flags Measures 36 in x 60 in and are 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
