Poland Flag - Republic of
SKU: POL35P

Like many nations of the world the Polish people have two flags, a Civil Flag flown by its citizens and a State Flag, which is used on government buildings. Poland's national colors which are red and white where officially adopted by the Selm on November 7th, 1831 although their use dates back to the 1200’s. The Selm decided during the November Uprising that the national colours of Poland would be those of the Polish-Lituanian Commonwealth Coat of Arms, which had predeceased the Polish nation much earlier. On August 1, 1919 after again achieving its independence the Polish Selm unveiled a new Polish flag that would be known as the Civil Ensign. It would be a bi-colour with white on the top and red on the bottom each equally divided. The State Ensign would include the Polish Coat of Arms imposed in the centre over the two colour bands. The Coat of Arms would change over the years as the Polish state was again occupied by foreign powers and it eventual independence.

The Polish Flag would play a major role in the liberation of the Polish State in the 1990’s. Its incorporation into the Solidarity flag and its use at several visits by Polish born Pope John Paul II transformed the Polish flag into a rallying-point that focused the people on eventual independence for Poland and the Polish people. A rhyme cited by Poland’s school children sums up the country’s affection for its flag:

The flag flies when the wind blows.
And on this flag there's white and red.
Red for love, white for a pure heart.
Our national colours are beautiful.
