Honduras Flag - Republic of SKU: HNS35P
The flag of the Republic of Honduras was adopted on January 9, 1866 and was designed to commemorate the flag of the former United Provinces of Central America. On September 15, 1821, Spain granted independence to Honduras, and the rest of the Central American provinces. A year later, the United Central American Provinces decided to join the newly declared Mexican Empire of Iturbide. The short-lived Iturbide Empire was overthrown in 1823 where upon the rest of Central America joined together to form the Federal Republic of Central America. In 1938, internal struggles caused the disintegration of the federal republic into independent states. The flag consists of three horizontal bands of equal width. The two outer blue bands represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The inner white band represents the land situated between ocean and sea and the peace and prosperity of its people. Five blue five-pointed stars in X formation commemorate 5 original members of the former Federal Republic of Central America: El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua Honduras and Guatemala and the desire to one day reunite as a single nation.
