Christopher Columbus introduced the first flag to the shores of Puerto Rico in the name of Ferdinand II of Aragon and his Queen Ysabel. The Spanish flag would fly over Puerto Rico until 1898, when control over the island would transfer the island to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris whereby the American flag would replace the Spanish flag. Francisco Gonzalo Marin is credited with presenting a Puerto Rican flag prototype in 1895 to the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Committee in New York City for adoption. It was Antonio Vélez Alvarado however who conceived it. Velez, who after staring intensely at a Cuban flag experienced an optical illusion in which the image of the flag became inverted. He made a paper prototype and introduced it to José Martí who wrote about the design in the Cuban revolutionary newspaper Patria. Two years later, Marín had a prototype flag sewn and presented it at New York's "Chimney Corner Hall" a gathering place of independence advocates. The "Puerto Rican Flag" bearing a light blue triangle from then on became the symbolize the Puerto Rican independence. The flag’s five alternating red and white stripes represented the bloodshed of brave warriors and the peace attainable after independence. The light blue triangle in the left bearing a white five-pointed star symbolised the Island nestled against a blue sky and sea. The triangle represented the executive, legislative and judicial arms of Puerto Rican Society. The Puerto Rican flag was quickly banned by the Spanish crown and it became a felony to display it when the Americans assumed control. In 1948, The US Government allowed Puerto Rico to elect an Insular Governor. The administration of Governor Luis Muñoz Marín adopted the Marín version of the Puerto Rican flag in 1952, officially defining the colour of the triangle as the blue contained in the United States flag, and proclaiming it the official national flag of Puerto Rico.
